چکیده

Following the success of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), considerable effort has been directed at the next generation of space-based precipitation radar (PR) to be launched aboard the Global Precipitation Measuring (GPM) core satellite. The GPM mission concept is centered on the deployment of a core observatory satellite with an active dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR), operating at Ku and Ka bands. The DPR aboard the GPM core satellite is expected to improve our knowledge of precipitation processes relative to the single-frequency on microphysics, and better accuracies in rainfall and liquid water content retrievals. This paper presents a new algorithm to retrieve parameters of drop size distribution of GPMDPR. Models have been built for GPM-DPR classification based on intensive study of APR2 (second generation airborne precipitation radar) data from NAMMA (NASA African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis) experiment. Index Terms — GPM, DSD (drop size distribution), Classification

The NASA Dual-Frequency Dual-Polarized Doppler Radar (D3R) System For GPM Ground Validation

Following on the successful introduction of single-frequency (Ku-Band) weather radar onboard the Tropical Rain Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite in 1997, the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission attempts to advance further the goal of making global scale precipitation observations by deploying the next generation of satellite-borne weather radars. The GPM satellite will carry a Ka-Ku...

Simulation of Space-borne Radar Observations of Precipitation at Ku and Ka Band

Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) is poised to be the next generation precipitation observations from space after the TRMM mission. The GPM will carry a dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR), operating at Ku and Ka band frequencies. Since space-borne precipitation observations have never been done in Ka band before, extensive research work on dualfrequency radar, including electromagnet...

Using a multiwavelength suite of microwave instruments to investigate the microphysical structure of deep convective cores

Due to the large natural variability of its microphysical properties, the characterization of solid precipitation is a longstanding problem. Since in situ observations are unavailable in severe convective systems, innovative remote sensing retrievals are needed to extend our understanding of such systems. This study presents a novel technique able to retrieve the density, mass, and effective di...

Multiple scattering in observations of the GPM dual‐frequency precipitation radar: Evidence and impact on retrievals

This paper illustrates how multiple scattering signatures affect Global Precipitation Measuring (GPM) Mission Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) Ku and Ka band reflectivity measurements and how they are consistent with prelaunch assessments based on theoretical considerations and confirmed by airborne observations. In particular, in the presence of deep convection, certain characteristics...

TRIPLE FREQUENCY RADAR REFLECTIVITY SIGNATURES OF SNOW: OBSERVATIONS AND COMPARISONS TO THEORETICAL ICE PARTICLE SCATTERING MODELS by

An observation-based study is presented that utilizes aircraft data from the 2003 Wakasa Bay AMSR Precipitation Validation Campaign to assess recent advances in the modeling of microwave scattering properties of realistic ice particles in the atmosphere. Previous work has suggested that a triple-frequency reflectivity framework appears to have utility for identifying key microphysical propertie...
